Common mistakes made by beginners

Two of the biggest mistakes a beginning poker player makes are firstly they play in far too many hands because they simply just want to play poker. This means staying in hands that are not good for you and you end up losing more money than actually making money. You will need too upgrade your starting hand requirements if you are playing in half or more hands you are dealt. The second being although there is no rule to bluffing most beginners’ feel that they have not won unless they bluff. Bluffing is part of poker however players new to the game may not know how or when to use it. Bluffing will only work against certain people and in certain situations. If you see that a player always calls to the showdown then it is impossible to bluff that player. This is why it is also important to know how your opposition plays. So never bluff for the sake of Bluffing.

Greg Ronaldsons words of advice for the Celebrities

My words of advice for the celebrities playing in the All Africa Poker Celebrity Charity Challenge would be to start the off tournament by playing tight and conservatively and as the blinds increase and players are eliminated you should play more aggressively. Practice a mean poker face beforehand and put it to good use when you’re bluffing Danny K off another big pot. Mostly importantly though, enjoy the experience and if in doubt go all-in!

Keep you strategy simple

When planning your strategy you must keep in mind the more complex you make it the greater chance it has of falling apart. It's important to have a strategy when playing poker, you won’t get very far without one but you need to have a series of small strategies, each tailored to a different situation. There are too many variable such as your opponents, blinds, position etc. to plan the game from the first hand to the last. Big grand strategies don’t factor luck as they are inflexible and unable to deal with eventualities. It’s advisable to have simpler strategies which you can adjust and implement when the situation warrants it. Quick thinking and flexibility is a key skill in poker. You must always be ready to adjust your strategy.
